 ABOUT JUAN FORMELL Y LOS VAN VAN

Heralded as Cuba’s greatest dance orchestra and known throughout the world for their iconic live performances, Los Van Van return to North America, reuniting with Leo Tizol, the producer and creative force behind their 1996 debut tour of the U.S.

Founded in 1969 by Juan Formell, Los Van Van continue to dominate as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of contemporary Afro-Caribbean music.  Fans can expect to hear the group’s greatest hits along with work from their more current CD releases. 

A bandleader, bassist and composer, Formell’s early career varied widely, performing with son, jazz and traditional music groups in Cuba.  Prior to founding Los Van Van, he was musical director for artists such as Elena Burke and Orquesta Revé.  These experiences provided the foundation for Formell’s unique sound and formed the basis for his reputation as a fearless musical innovator.  Click here to see Los Van Van in Concert.

MUSICAL INNOVATION

Once on his own, Formell melded Cuba’s classical charanga orchestra instrumentation, with its emphasis on flute and violin, with North American elements such as the electric guitar and drum set.  He coined the term “songo” to identify his new sound, a fusion of traditional Cuban son, American pop and rock, Brazilian bossa nova along with other music forms.  A gifted chronicler of daily life in Cuba, Formell’s powerful compositions resonate with his Cuban audience and with Cuban music fans across the globe. 

La Maquinaria (“the Machinery”), Los Van Van’s latest CD release from Cuba’s Egrem label, is a collection of danceable tracks incorporating innovative, contemporary arrangements of the group’s hits from the 80’s and 90’s.  For more about the group, see  Los Van Van - Official website
